"The Warriors"? - cheezy gang film from the 70s?

Rockstar Games (Grand Theft Auto) is making a video game based on this movie - how random right?

we were in Coney Island yesterday and saw the billboard for it - i didn't get a photo of it myself but I found a pic of it on this "fansite" http://thewarriorsreallivebunch.homestead.com/files/game_ad.jpg

why make a game from this movie? or am i underestimating the cult following it had?
